Willow Ptarmigan Portrait

Jamin and I were driving, well Jamin was, through a campground area and I caught the slightest flash of red out of the corner of my eye in some bushes. It seemed weird and at first I figured it was probably some trash left behind or something like that. I wasn't totally sure so I mentioned what I saw to Jamin and he quickly spun the car around so we could take a look. It only took him a second to see it and call out a Willow Ptarmigan, which was one of the species that had avoided us up to that point. Of course it was total sun in the middle of the day but I figured let me at least get a documentation shot since I'd never seen this species before. The bird was incredibly friendly and barely hid in some bushes as we approached. I noticed some clouds that might be headed our way and so we decided to wait it out and see if the light could get better. It finally did and as luck would have it the bird came out and walked right towards me. I didn't have a zoom lens on so I flipped vertical quickly to fit as much of the bird as I could in the frame I grabbed this portrait. The details and colors in the plumage are quite impressive and I hope to get another chance at the species again next year.
