Sometimes photographing a bird on a stick is all you can do. I try to capture something additional to just a bird on a stick whenever I can and for this Arctic Warbler I thought the background was quite fitting. We got stuck with full sunny skies for the majority of the days we were on the tundra working with these birds so capturing them in soft overcast light was not happening for the most part. Since the light was strong and I knew I wanted to capture the essence of the habitat these unique warblers live in I closed the aperture down to f/16 and exposed for the bird in the sun and the snowy mountain tops and took the shot. I made sure to move to place the bird in the dark band that was the shade from one of the very few clouds in the sky so that it would stand out and that's pretty much it. Showing off the incredible habitat was always in my mind when photographing many birds in Alaska. Close-up portraits are always nice but to me the main draw of Alaskan birds is where they live and I enjoyed trying to always showcase that when given the opportunity.
