I had just wrapped up photographing a pair of Sandhill Cranes with my 24-70mm len as they are very friendly, and I had switched to my 500mm for some close up portraits. Suddenly they started changing behavior and I didn't know what was going on. I didn't see any other birds around either. Next thing I know they break into a courtship dance right next to me. My first shots cut off every limb and the head so then I ran back and tried again. Same issue, still too close, time to run away from the birds again. This time I got the distance right and thankfully it was still happening and I was able to get one of the birds in mid-air, legs kicking out and a piece of something in its beak. It was all over in about a minute so I was glad I ended up getting something fun from the experience. I'm hoping the next time this happens it can be in some more dramatic lighting!
