I threw on my 24-70mm lens for this encounter with a very friendly pair of Sandhill Cranes. For this image I was laying on the ground in the direction the pair were feeding and hoping they would walk towards me. Sure enough they did and I ended up at 26mm for this image as one of them lifted its head from feeding for just a moment to look right at me. It went right back to probing the grass for food after this image and I was glad to have a silent shutter to not disturb the bird when it was so close. The overcast sky provided a nice white background which I think helped to make those crazy orange eyes stand out.
