American Dipper Tower

American Dipper Tower

This shot was from my last day in Alaska and it was a welcome surprise. We had already photographed two other American Dippers in some other areas and while I got some wonderful close portraits I was never able to get anything that really showed off their habitat. This bird landed in this spot multiple times so it must have been one of its favorite lookouts. There were a bunch of branches along the right side of the river that was in the way so it took me some time to finally find some rocks that jutted out into the river enough for me to get the perspective I wanted to clear out most of those branches. It ended up being a bit further away than I was planning but that worked out fine as it gave me some nice layers in the waterfall and some dimension to the photo. I balanced my camera and lens on some rocks and hoped the bird would hold still long enough for the 1/15 shutter speed. I shook many of the shots and the bird moved in some but I got a couple with both the bird and the rocks all sharp and some nice motion in the water. I did remove a few small branches on the right in post to clean up the final image and then I was really happy with the result.
