The Yellow Eye

The Yellow Eye

Lately I find myself enjoying the look of these juvenile male Hooded Mergansers more than the adults. There is something about that yellow eye popping out of the brown coloration of the head and the subtle white starting to show in the hood that is a striking look to me. This lighting certanily helped make that brilliant eye stand out. This location has provided me with so many opportunities to capture these birds with some incredible light against a solid black background. Running my exposure roughly 2-3 stops under what the camera tells me I should ends up being just about perfect. I can also say it's made a bit easier with the mirrorless camera that shows me exactly what I'm shooting as I capture it. I always did fine with the old dSLR in situations like this but seeing it live is no doubt nicer.
