The last image in this short series of what I consider more abstract and hopefully unique images is this shadow of a Snowy Egret. I was photographing the friendly Florida birds with my favorite person Emilie Reid when we saw this Snowy making its way under an elevated walkway. We decided to head up over it to see if we could come up with something different. We were both shooting with slightly wider lenses, me my 70-200mm and Emilie with her new 105mm f/1.4 which I think is an awesome lens! I started simply photographing the bird from above when suddently I saw it's shadow on this rock and noticed how great the shape of the bird was in the shadow. I then started concentrating on photographing the shadow. First photographing the bird and it's shadow, fun but not too creative. Next I started trying to crop the bird out to get just the shadow, a little better now. Finally I dropped my shutter speed to 1/30 which required f/13 to get the proper exposure and then tried to get some movement in the water as it splashed against the rocks. Now I finally had something different I thought. This is often how it goes for me in the field. I rarely see the best option right away and so I try something, try something else, and hopefully eventually work my way to something unique and more creative. Thanks for following along with this series and I hope you enjoyed some of them. Tomorrow we'll be back to more "normal" photos.
