Steamy Foot

Can you figure out what is going on in this photo? Before continuing to read this caption go ahead and try. It took me a while to figure it out when I saw it happening in person. The workshop group and I were laying in the marsh with Emilie Reid on this gorgeous morning as we all setup for some backlight on a small group of cooperative Wood Storks. It wasn't long after the sun hit the birds that this individual decided to lift its foot out of the water. That is when I noticed the steam rising up and at first I thought it was the bird's breath because it was in a different position than you see here. When I realized it was the foot steaming it all made sense. Since they spend the night in the marsh the water likely cools down and cools their feet so when it lifted its colder foot out into the warm morning sun the steam started flowing off it. It was simultaneously bizarre and beautiful and I immediately started whisper yelling at everyone to start shooting this. After a bit the entire group of storks took off to feed for the day but we all couldn't forget this amazing moment!
