There is nothing like driving up to the boat launch a good bit before sunrise and seeing glassy water with low-hanging fog on the surface! The potential for epic shots is there, now all that's left is to get out on the water as fast as possible and hopefully find cooperative birds. Thankfully this particular morning happened well into my 2 weeks with these birds and I already knew where some usually cooperative birds would be. I paddled my client and myself to where I expected the birds to be and sure enough there was the family of 2 adults and 2 chicks and the conditions were incredible! The next hour flew by as we spent time watching this family be fed, rest, preen, and be loons. The photography was fast-paced and I bounced back and forth between my long 300mm lens and my 70-200mm zoom to get even wider scenes. I was thrilled I got this scene in focus as I hung the camera over the edge of the kayak and hovered the lens inches over the water. The adult had some food and was swimming towards the chick. I captured the entire sequence but there was something I liked about the seperation between the two in this foggy scene. The layers of trees, then low clouds and the orange sun glowing at the top made for quite the color sandwich!
