Blue and Gold and a Merganser

Blue and Gold and a Merganser

Two days ago I shared an image of a Red-breasted Merganser close portrait as it was sitting on rocks. This was more of what I was after by using the telephoto setup in the under water housing. It was late in the morning and the sun was incredibly harsh already so I dialed in as dark of an exposure as I coudl get while still shooting a wide open aperture and went for some back-lit images as this Red-breasted Merganser cruised around the water. I played around a lot with how far under the water I would dip the lens. Too much and the bird was barely visible, not enough and it looked just like a shot taken above water. I held my breath, smashed my eye into the viewfinder and then took a bunch when it was going right into the glittering sun on the water and ended up with this shot. I enjoyed how the bokeh on the right side was curving up with a small wave and part of the bokeh is above the water line. Not something you could get shooting normally. I hope you enjoy it, I certanily had fun trying to take the photo.
