Squinting into the sun watching a lovely Prothonotary Warbler work the edge of a swamp feeding is a wonderful thing. He pauses for a moment on this snag sticking up in the water and allows me a moment to move into position to line up the sun glittering on the water in the background. I struggle to get focus as there is so much flare on the lens, finally grabbing the bit of glowing yellow feathers of the bird I start shooting. The first shot it simply to get a shot. The bird is still there. I focus again, being more careful to make sure I caught it right and then think about composition. I stood up a little taller to look down on the bird more and include a little more of the glittering water and grab another shot. The bird's head isn't angled right, he is looking out of the frame I have composed. I stay locked in and patiently wait what feels like an eternity because I know the most likely thing to happen is he will fly off the perch. Thankfully he doesn't and he finally turns the right direction and I get the shot I'm after. At that point I finally let out a breath and relax a little since I know I captured the moment the way I wanted. Thr Prothonotary Warbler bounces onto a nearby branch and returns to feeding and I'm standing there waist deep in the swamp with a huge grin on my face. This is warbler photography to me!
