A male Bufflehead takes off out of the water to chase another male. I spent this morning laying along the bank of the Delaware River hoping to photograph the Bufflehead ducks there. The morning started off really slow with lots of fog, it didn't look promising. Finally after about 2 hours of laying there, the sun started to push through the fog and just as this was happening a group of Bufflehead flew in a ways out. It was so calm and quiet this morning I could hear them splashing around as I watched them chase each other far out in the river. As luck would have it they slowly worked their way towards me and before I knew it the group was right in front of me performing their courtship displays. Part of that display was to quickly take off, fly low along the water, then land right near another duck. They would do this over and over again, it was incredibly entertaining to watch. I was lucky enough to get this bird sharp just as he took a few steps out of the water. Taken at National Park Dredge Spoils in southern New Jersey.
